The Sheep costume / Ovce, kostim za maškare

Ovo je jedan vrlo jednostavan kostim. Potrebno je malo strpljenja i puno vate. A rezultat je nježna, mekana, vunasta, pahuljasta ovca.
This is very simple costume. You will need some patience and a lot of cotton wool. And the result is soft, gentle, wooly, fluffy sheep.

For the base, you could use a old white shirt with the hood or you can sew something similar from the old bed sheet, for example. You can have some sleves if you like. We didn't have any sleeves because we had white sweaters underneath.
You should have some lace/string on the hood and some ears (I forgot to sketch them).

Then you should take some glue in your hands or a glue gun and lots of lots of lots of cotton wool.
Twitch and glue, twitch and glue, twitch and glue... and so on....
Don't forget the ears!

I, evo nas: obitelj ovaca, odnosno jedna ovca i dvoje janjadi. Beeeeeee
And, here we are; the family of sheep. I mean, one sheep and two lambs. Baaaaaaaa

The Penguins costume / Pingvini, kostim za maškare

Moja tri pingvina!
Ovo su prve maškare
najmlađeg pingvina,
prije nekih 7 godina.
 These are my 3 penguins;
first costume party
for the youngest,
some 7 yrs ago.
 Ovako nekako sam to zamislila, poput ovih slikica pingvina.

This is how I imagined this costume, something like these penguins on the pictures. But, the real inpiration was my little son who couldn't walk proper then, his walk actually reminded me of a penguin walk.

And, again, I am so sorry for the lack of photos, expecially for its (un)quality. In my defence, I'll say that I used video camera more then regular photo camera back then. Who would have known that I will be needing some penguin photos in a near future?

This was my very fist time working with the foam. I bought a piece of foam 1m x 2m (where I live, I buy it in a store that sells paints) 2 cm thick.
I cut the shapes, then colored with a black pigment (that's a small bottle of paint that you buy in a paint shop and normally use it when you want to add some color to the white foundation paint for the inside walls). I never used pigment before, so I didn't know that I am supposed to add some water with it (to get more color), so I added some white foundation paint, so my penguins turned out grey instead of black. But, I liked it even better that way anyway.
Then I handstitched all parts together.
This white head/belly part turned out pretty messy, because I messed it up painting, so I decided to cover that area. I made that shape out of old bed sheet, and hand stitched it also.
I used 2 pieces of foam to make 3 pengins like that; the smallest was made from several  pieces that were left out when I finished bigger penguins.
I cut also beak, bow, flippers and foot from the same foam. I colored it with yellow pigment, except for the bow - I had some red paint + yellow = orange bow.
From the bottom of the foot, I handstitched a elastic band to secure it on kids' foot / shoe. The effect was really good, they looked just like small pengins :)
Kids didn't need any jackets under this costume.

And that's how the South Pole penguins came to visit us on the northern hemisphere on that cold, rainy day...

Little Mermaids / Male sirene, kostim za maškare

These are my mermaids,
photos were taken some
10 yrs ago.
It was raining that day, everything around them was wet, it looks they just  came out from  the sea :)

Mala sirena je bila naša inspiracija. Evo kako smo je napravili:

The Little Mermaid was our inspiration. And here is how we made this costume:

U struk sam stavila lastik. Uopće nije problem, je li tako?

I don't have a tutorial, but I belive there should be no problem making this costume. I used plastic bags (the one you get in the store when you are buying groceries) and some garbage bags, in two different sheades of blue. I decided to use that, because I wanted some "wet" look.
I cut the stripes just like I drew on the picture, trying to imitate fish scales, and sewed it with sewing mashine, one by one to each other. You can see the tread only on the first stripe, the others are hidden below the scales. When I got enough of material, I cut it in the shape I drew on the picture and sewed it like a skirt. I left the bottom unsewed, so girls could walk normally.
Fish tail - I used the cardboard for its shape, covered it with the plastic bag and glued it to the back of the skirt.
I put some elastic band in the waist line, and that was it! No problem at all!

A za grudnjak, uzela sam isto najlon, presavinila ga u lepezu, škarama ga malo formirala u polukrug i dobila nešto slično školjci.

And, for the bra, I used the plastic bag again, folded it like a fan, cut the egdes a little bit to get a shape like a shell. I hand stitched it to the shirt.

I purchased the wigs, girls looved them, their favorite part of the costume!

I also bought two sea stars, painted them and glued them to the little comb for the hair. It was just something that any mermaid would wear :)

Pierrot The Sad Clown / Pierrot kostim za maškare

Otuda i njen zbunjen pogled (hoću/neću plakati?).

This Carnival was held 11 yrs ago. I have to appologise once again for my bad photos. I don't think they seem so bad alive, I am afraid my scanning made it lose their quality.
Anyway, that year we were Pierrots, The Sad Clowns.
Child no.1 was alrady in the kindergarden, child no.2 had her very fist Carnival, that's why she looks so confused (should I cry or not?).
Whole kindergarden and some Moms were dressed up like Pierrots. There was cca 40 of Pierrots :) Our kids from the kindergarden alrady had that long white "dress" that reminds of a nightgown that was made for some other event. Moms only had to add some details for them to become Pierrots. I decided to make entirely new outfit for my youngest.

This was our inspiration; back-white clown, with black hat, white face and a tear on his cheak .

I was very youg back then and I needed a pattern to sew. I used Burda, as usual. I didn't make any pockets, of course. I made front and back white, and sleeves black. It was super easy, just like it's written!
From black tile I cut 3 layers of different lenght, but very very wide. That is very important when it comes to shirring (to shir, to ruffle).
I used very thin black elastic band, the kind that goes into a needle. Tile around a nack is very itchy, so I recomed a child should wear a turte neck shirt.
The buttons are also made out of black tile, shaped like a flower and hand stiched to the shirt.

Ovo je donji dio, hlače. Jednu nogavicu sam skrojila bijelu, a drugu crnu.
This is bottom part, some pants. I made one leg white, and other black.

           Ovako je izgledao moj tužni klaun!
Faca joj je baš bila primjerena.

This is my Sad Clown!
An expression on her face was
very appropiate ;)

A black clown's hat is made out of lady pantyhose
(see the photo).
The cheapest kind is usually the best.
Cut, sew and put some tile on the top.

I myself had also very simple
outfit; white shirt with black sleeves and black-white
pants with elastic band in waist, that's all! And some tile around my neck and a hat! The paint for face I had purchesed at drugstore.

Since I got few emails regarding my last post, I will try to explain the difference between Halloween and Carnival:
Carnival is a festive season which occurs immediately before Lent; the main events are usually during February. Carnival typically involves a public celebration or parade combining some elements of a circus, mask and public street party. People often dress up or masquerade during the celebrations, which mark an overturning of daily life.
During  the Carnival, the mayor of the town hands over the keys to the city to the Carnival master ("meštar od karnevala") and the spirit of the Carnival takes over completely. The festival includes several different events, culminating on the final Sunday in a masked procession.
Many towns in Croatia observe the Carnival period, often incorporating local traditions and celebrating local culture. Just before the end of Carnival, every town burns a man-like doll called a "mesopust", who is blamed for all the strife of the previous year.
Masks are central to the Carnival celebration, and worn to many of the festivities, including concerts and parties. Children and teachers are commonly allowed to wear masks to school for a day, and also wear masks at school dances or while trick-or-treating.

And here is a link about Croatian most famous Carnival :

Onda to nije postojalo.

This ladybug costume is going to be first among 15 other Halloween costumes I have made for my kids that I am going to share with you.

I am sorry I don't have a tutorial to show you step by step how to make this beautiful costume for little girls. But, back then, I didn't think of that.
I am sorry I didn't have a digital camera.
But, it wasn't invented back then, I belive.
I am sorry I didn't take better photos, oh, well...

These photos were taken 15 yrs ago :)

This pattern from Burda was my inspiration. I had this magazin long before I had my child, but I decided to make this as soonest she was old enough to wear it.

Ovo je orginalan kroj iz Burde.
Po njemu sam sve radila, osim bluze.
Nju sam već imala.

This is original pattern.
I had made costume according to it,
except for the blause,
I already had it.

Iskrojila sam sve dijelove, osim za bluzu.
Naravno, napravila sm i neke izmjene.

I had cut all the parts according to the pattern, except the blause.
I had made some changes; wings were made from only red material.
There was a thin line between them, black dots were zig-zaged to the wings.
I didn' t have any red material with black polka dots for the shorts,
so I used plain red material.
I had some big red buttons for the vest, of course.
She had red tigths, and was set to go!

Za ticala sam uzela jednu dulju žicu,
jednu crnu traku koju sam prošila da mogu žicu uvući unutra,
a na krajeve stavila crvene kuglice.
Žicu ( u jednom komadu) sam joj provukla kroz kikice.

And, for the antlers, I had used a  longer wire
that I "clothed" with black ribbon
and little red balls on the top.
The antlers were secured on her head.

a ja dobila kroničnu zarazu maškarama
koja traje i dan danas....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This was my child's first costume party.
She won 1st prise.
And then my addiction with making costumes started.
And it least untill today :)
As you probably know by now, I come from Croatia.
We don't have Halloween.
What we have is called Maškare, Fašnik, Poklade;
every part of the country has its own name for it, and its own tradition.
Maškare are held usually in February,
a day before Ash Wednesday.
It was our tradition to dress up in a scary costumes
to scare away the winter.
It is a joyfull day becouse it celebrates the beginning of spring;
it is loud, it is fun!
I usually make costume for my kids,
so they are not scary at all.
We have a competition for best children and adoult costumes.
Only condition for partipation on this event
is that costumes are handmade.
I will show you some of my work in upcomming posts.
Hope you'll like it :)
