Tomorrow is the first day of Advent.
I make Advent Wreath every year
and try to make it on time,
but this particular year Advent litteraly sneaked up on me.

Danas je cijeli dan padala kiša,
nije baš pogodno vrijeme za branje zeleniša.
Ubrala sam što je naišlo;
malo kadulje, koja maslinova grančica, malo smrike,
magunje, zelenike i još nečega čije ime ne znam,
ali raste divlje oko kuće.

It was rainy all day long,
not so pleasant weather for picking up some greenery.
I picked what I have found around my home;
some sage, olive braches, juniper,
strawberry tree, local sort of oak and something else,
that I don't know name of.

Grančice sam zabadala u formu od slame i,
nakon nekog vremena,
dobila sam ovogodišnji vjenčić.

I sticked the branches into straw form and,
after a while,
I got this year's Advent Wreath.

 Uvijek koristim prirodne materijale,
točnije ono što nađem oko kuće.

I always use all natural material,
well, the materials I can found near by.

Ove godine nemam nikakve mašne niti ukrase,
odlučila sam naglasak staviti na bobice i plodove.
Mislila sam ukomponirati i orahe i mendule (bademe, bajame),
ali sam odustala.
To ću slijedeće godine :)
Ove godine neka sve bude  crveno-zeleno.

This year I didn't use any bows or decorations,
I decided to put an accent on wild berries and fruits.
I was thinking of composing some wallnuts and almonds,
but I decided not to for now.
I will use that idea next year :)
I am going to make this year's decor red-green.

Who could know that every plant I used has a different shade of green?

Sutra, za ručkom, palimo prvu adventsku svijeću.
Još samo četiri nedjelje do Božića :)

Tommorow, at dinner time, we light up first Advent candle.
We are counting only four Sundays untill Christmas :)

Od maslina do maslinovog ulja / From Olives To Olive Oil

Od maslina do maslinovog ulja
From Olives To Olive Oil

Usput ću probati i objasniti put od maslina do maslinovog ulja.

Last week I shared a post about this year's olive gathering.
This time prepare yourself for lots of photos that will show you how olives are being processed.
Along the way, I will try to explain the production of olive oil.

Ovo je fotografija displaya u uljari,
mislila sam da ću pomoću ovog prikaza lakše objasniti proces proizvodnje maslinovog ulja.

This is a photo of Oil Mill display,
I thought that this way I could explain the production process easier.

U prvoj fazi se masline peru, melju i miješaju.

In first phase olives are being washed, grounded into a paste and blended.

Prva je postaja vaga.
Masline se u uljaru dovoze u vrećema i vagaju se.

First station is the scale.
Olives are delivered in sackets and are being scaled here.

Then are being put from the sackets into this container.

 Elevatorom se prebacuju dalje, na pranje.

Elevator is taking olives further, into washing area.

Operu se vodom,

Olives are washed with water,

skupljaju se u ovaj spremnik,

collect into this container,

i dalje odvode na mljevenje.

and take off to the grounding area.

Ovdje se masline melju u pastu.

Olives are being grounded into a paste here.

Ovako izgleda pasta od maslina,
njom se napune mikseri.

This is how olive paste looks like,
blenders are being filled with it.

This is the blender,
it blends (stirs, mixes) the olive paste for some time.
Water is added, too, to accelerate and facilitate the process.

The main reason why the olive paste is being stirred for long
is that oil particles, which are tiny at the beginning, are binding together
during this period and become bigger that way.

This is second phase of oil production,
now the paste is taken to the centrifugal machine where oil is separated from the waste.

Ovo je centrufuga.

This is centrifugal machine.

This is oil, not in form of final product,
but  mixed with water.

A ovo je otpad.

This is the waste.

Otpad se elevatorm odvodi iz pogona.

The waste is taken off the operation by elevator.

The waste is formed from olives' pit (kernel) and skin.
It can be used as fertilizer, for fire ignition,
but there are technologies that can extract some more of olive oil out of it
(since the waist is quite greasy),
 but such oil must be properly declared/labeled.

In last phase, oil is being separated from the water.

Ovo je separator.

This is the separator.

Separator odvaja vodu...

It separates the water...

... od ulja.

... from the oil.

I, evo ga! Maslinovo ulje!

And here it is! Olive oil!

Teče i teče i teče :)

And it flows and flows and flows :)

Now it is time to scale the oil containers.
The weight of this containers is going to be subtract from the weight when they are full of oil.
That's how we can know how much of olive oil we get at the end.

Mama koristi ove aluminijske i plastične posude
 za prevoz do kuće.

My Mom uses these alluminum and plastic containers to deliver the oil home.

At home, olive oil is being stored in steinless steel barrels.
That's how olive oil get fresh for couple of years, if needed.
But, we usually produce enough for one year of family needs, maybe two.

Kad je ulje prestalo curiti,
ponovno smo izvagali sve posude napunjene uljem.

When the olive oil stopped leaking,
we scaled the containers filled with oil and subtracted the weight of empty containers.
Then we get the weight of olive oil itself, measured in kilograms.
When those kilograms are being devided with the coefficient 0,92,
we get the amount of olive oil expressed in liters.
So, 1 kg (kilogram) of olive oil has 1,087 l (liter), or,
1 l (liter) of olive oil has 0,92 kg (kilograms).

Maslinovo ulje, tekuće zlato. Olive oil, liquid gold.

 Olive oil is used almost daily in our diet, unambiguous is its nutritional value
and in the past it was even used as a means of payment.
I hope I managed to explain the  production of olive oil with this post.
Of course, I'm not a pro, so there was no sense to use some technical terms that I could copy from other sources. My goal was to show this year's olive processing in my family and bring  to you some traditions that we cherish.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Moja prijateljica Meeha je bila prilično iznenađena starošću našeg maslinika.
Za stablo masline bi slobodno mogli reći da je neuništivo,
iz malog dijela korijena može narasti novo stablo.
A ovo su 2 najstarije masline u Hrvatskoj,
prema njima su naše još bebice :)
My friend Meeha was genuinly surprised when she read how old our olive trees are.
You can feel fee to say that olive tree is indestructible,
new tree can sprout form the smallest part of the root.
And here are photos of 2 of the oldest olive trees in Croatia,
according to them our olive trees are still babies :)
Da li i vi koristite maslinovo ulje?
How about you?
Do you like olive oil, do you use it in your diet?
Berba maslina / Olives Harvest Time
Olives Harvest Time in Croatia
Ne mogu odoliti, a da ne podijelim ove fotografije sa vama.
I can't resist to show you these photos.
Prošli vikend smo brali masline.
Last weekend we 've spent picking up olives.
Ovaj  stari maslinik pripada mojoj mami,
a masline je sadio dida moje babe,
dakle moj šukundjed, tko zna koje godine....
This old olives belong to my mother,
olives were planted by my grandmother's grandfather,
my greatgreatgrandfather that is, who knows how many years ago...
Tu ima i nekih mladih maslinica koje će rod dati tek za koju godinu.
There are some young olive trees,
that are supposed to have yield in few years.
Ove godine su masline stvarno dobro rodile.
This year's yield was really really great.
Mi nastojimo ne brati masline dok su sve zelene,
odnosno čekamo dok većina sazori.
We are tending not to pick them up while they are all green,
we are waiting for most of them to mature.
Sjećam se, kad sam bila mala,
dida nas je vodio u branje još kasnije, krajem studenog.
A onda je znalo biti burno. I hladno.
I remember, when I was a child,
my grandpa used to take us picking up olives much later on,
by the end of November,
It was windy by then. And cold.
Volim branje u ovo doba godine,
nije zima, boravak u polju je prava uživancija.
I love this time of the year,
it is no cold yet, and is quite a pleasure to spend days in fields.
Vrijeme nas je poslužilo ove godine.
The weather served us right this year.
Kao i  većini obitelji,
svi idemo u branje.
Like in most of the families,
we all go into fields.
Kad je ekipa dobra,
pravi je gušt brati :)
When the team is right,
it is a day well spent :)
Pošto nemamo maslina više nego što nam treba za vlastite potrebe,
beremo ručno.
Since we are small farmers, and grow olives for our personal use only,
we pick them up manually.
Ispod masline prostremo tendu,
mislim da većina ljudi tako bere, bar u našim krajevima.
Kad se određena maslina pobere,
tenda se skupi i sav se sadržaj (i masline i lišće) prebaci u vreće.
We usually lay the canvas underneath the olive tree,
that's how the most of the people around here does it.
When a certain tree is finished,
we  gather the canvas and drop all there is (and olives and leaves) into sacks.
Rukom beremo masline i puštamo da padaju na tlo,
odnosno na ceradu.
We gather olives by hand and let them fall on the ground,
on the canvas, that is.
Ovaj suncobran je "patentirani"  :)  izum moga ujca,
njega razapnemo ispod sredine stabla,
gdje pod nije dobro prekriven ceradom.
This parasol is my uncle's " patented"  :)  invention ,
we open it beneath the middle of the tree,
where the ground is not well covered by the canvas.
Dok se maslina bere,
usput se i režu stare garne.
While the olive tree is being gathered,
at the sam time, some old branches are being cut off.
Kad je stablo previsoko,
koristimo se skalama /ljestvama.
Ipak, nastojimo da stabla ne budu previsoka.
We tend not to let olive trees to grow really high.
But, when certain tree gets higher,
we use ladder.
Netko se više voli koristiti ovakvim grabljicama nego prstima.
nemam ništa protiv ovog pomagala,
samo što skida i dosta lišća.
Somebody uses this little rakes beter then fingers.
I don't mind this kind of tool,
just it gatheres a lot of leaves, too.
Savršena grana.
A perfect branch.
Savršeni plodovi Majke Prirode.
Perfect gifts of Mother Nature.
Naravno, najbolji dio dana u polju je ručak.
Moje udarnice uživaju u kratkoj pauzi.
Of course, the best part of a day spent in fields is lunch time.
My hard-working girls enjoying short break.
Vrijeme je bilo toliko toplo,
da se i sama priroda zbunila.
Ovaj vrisak (vrijesak) je ponovno procvjetao.
The wather was that much warm, even the nature itself was confused.
This Winter savory has bloomed once again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Back home,
olives get out of sacks and need to be separated from the leaves.

Obično se koristi ovakva "moderna" naprava;

It is common to use this "modern" gadget;
wooden framework and slats with gaps in
between them wide enough for leaves to get through, but not the olives.
But, some of the olives get through now and then :)

This is how much olives my Mom had this year.
Not bad. Not bad at all.

Untill the time of the further processing,
olives are held in sea water or drinking water with the addition of sea salt,
so the olives don't spoil.

Priroda me svaki put iznova iznenadi.

Nature amaze me over and over.
These olives are quite a magnificent scene, don't you think?
