Pierrot The Sad Clown / Pierrot kostim za maškare

Otuda i njen zbunjen pogled (hoću/neću plakati?).

This Carnival was held 11 yrs ago. I have to appologise once again for my bad photos. I don't think they seem so bad alive, I am afraid my scanning made it lose their quality.
Anyway, that year we were Pierrots, The Sad Clowns.
Child no.1 was alrady in the kindergarden, child no.2 had her very fist Carnival, that's why she looks so confused (should I cry or not?).
Whole kindergarden and some Moms were dressed up like Pierrots. There was cca 40 of Pierrots :) Our kids from the kindergarden alrady had that long white "dress" that reminds of a nightgown that was made for some other event. Moms only had to add some details for them to become Pierrots. I decided to make entirely new outfit for my youngest.

This was our inspiration; back-white clown, with black hat, white face and a tear on his cheak .

I was very youg back then and I needed a pattern to sew. I used Burda, as usual. I didn't make any pockets, of course. I made front and back white, and sleeves black. It was super easy, just like it's written!
From black tile I cut 3 layers of different lenght, but very very wide. That is very important when it comes to shirring (to shir, to ruffle).
I used very thin black elastic band, the kind that goes into a needle. Tile around a nack is very itchy, so I recomed a child should wear a turte neck shirt.
The buttons are also made out of black tile, shaped like a flower and hand stiched to the shirt.

Ovo je donji dio, hlače. Jednu nogavicu sam skrojila bijelu, a drugu crnu.
This is bottom part, some pants. I made one leg white, and other black.

Ovako je izgledao moj tužni klaun!
Faca joj je baš bila primjerena.

This is my Sad Clown!
An expression on her face was
very appropiate ;)

A black clown's hat is made out of lady pantyhose
(see the photo).
The cheapest kind is usually the best.
Cut, sew and put some tile on the top.

I myself had also very simple
outfit; white shirt with black sleeves and black-white
pants with elastic band in waist, that's all! And some tile around my neck and a hat! The paint for face I had purchesed at drugstore.

Since I got few emails regarding my last post, I will try to explain the difference between Halloween and Carnival:
Carnival is a festive season which occurs immediately before Lent; the main events are usually during February. Carnival typically involves a public celebration or parade combining some elements of a circus, mask and public street party. People often dress up or masquerade during the celebrations, which mark an overturning of daily life.
During  the Carnival, the mayor of the town hands over the keys to the city to the Carnival master ("meštar od karnevala") and the spirit of the Carnival takes over completely. The festival includes several different events, culminating on the final Sunday in a masked procession.
Many towns in Croatia observe the Carnival period, often incorporating local traditions and celebrating local culture. Just before the end of Carnival, every town burns a man-like doll called a "mesopust", who is blamed for all the strife of the previous year.
Masks are central to the Carnival celebration, and worn to many of the festivities, including concerts and parties. Children and teachers are commonly allowed to wear masks to school for a day, and also wear masks at school dances or while trick-or-treating.

And here is a link about Croatian most famous Carnival :
And here are some other costumes that I have made:
Ladybug, Little Mermaids, The Penguins,

  1. First of all, I like the photos a lot - they are so genuine and charming! The costumes are wonderful and it's not easy to require that elegant simplicity (pantyhose hat - who would have thought?!) PS: We have no carnival in Romania and of course Halloween is not on our list, but we have plenty of New Year's Eve costume party :)

    1. I am glad you liked it!
Carnival is very important part of the year, in my home town it leasts for 5 weekends! And do we like to masqurade? Oh, yeeees! Kids love it and I'm addicted, too! The best part is that costumes are held secret untill the parade! Now, that's the explosion of creativity!
